21 Arthurs was started by David Chaston and Richard Moir in October 2020. Having worked together before, they wanted to expand their work and build something true to their own practices as tattooers. What began as a private studio has grown into a free-flowing space, part tattoo shop and part working art studio, where tattooing sits alongside painting, drawing and design.
Tayla joined the shop after its first year, and the studio has since grown to welcome Alessandro and Matt. Together the five bring their own distinct approaches under one roof: Richard with his handpoked work; David, an established all-rounder who moves comfortably between styles; Tayla, who trained under David and is now tattooing clients of her own, with a particular love for bold traditional; Alessandro, whose bold designs and heavy black shading draw on skate culture, punk rock and traditional tattooing; and Matt, whose years in an old-school street shop shaped his range, from fine line black and grey to traditional work with a medieval edge.
David Chaston has been tattooing for two decades. In that time he has helped establish and worked in some of Cape Town's most loved and trusted tattoo shops, while extensive stints tattooing across the US, Europe and Southeast Asia have shaped his approach and broadened his craft. David's range runs from large-scale work to small, detailed pieces, from traditional and pattern work through to portraits. Away from the machine, he is constantly painting and drawing, a daily practice that feeds directly back into his tattooing and keeps his work versatile and evolving.
Richard Moir, known as Ninjabreadboy, is a handpoked tattooer, artist and illustrator based in Cape Town. Tattooing professionally since 2015, he works across a range of styles with a focus on nature-based imagery. The natural world and its landscapes are a constant thread through his work, and the handpoked technique lets him build the tones and textures that bring them to life. He holds a degree in Applied Design with a specialisation in illustration, and beyond tattooing, he collaborates with clients on a variety of art and design projects.
Tayla has been working in tattoo shops since 2019 and joined 21 Arthurs in 2021, where she has been apprenticing under David Chaston since 2022. She enjoys working across a range of styles, with a real love for bold, traditional tattoos, and spends much of her time outside the shop drawing and painting flash. Tayla is always keen to tattoo just about anything.
Alessandro has been tattooing since 2019 and draws a lot of inspiration from skate culture, punk rock and traditional tattooing. His work is built around bold designs, heavy black shading, and tattoos that hold up for years to come. When he’s not tattooing, he’s usually screen printing, drawing, or working on something creative. Friendly, passionate, and happiest with a machine in hand, Alessandro loves making strong, timeless tattoos that look just as good healed as they do fresh.
Matt has been tattooing for over 12 years, learning the trade in an old-school street shop where being able to tackle just about anything was part of the job. That background means he’s comfortable working across a wide range of styles, though he’s particularly drawn to fine line black and grey work and traditional tattooing filtered through a love of medieval imagery.
For Matt, a good tattoo appointment is about more than the tattoo itself. He enjoys getting to know his clients, making sure they feel at ease, and creating an experience that’s as solid as the work leaving the studio. When he’s not tattooing, you’ll probably find him in the mountains with his dog, on a wildfire crew, or listening to cold wave and goth records.
Behind the red door on the corner of Arthur's and Main you'll find a free-flowing space where tattooing sits alongside painting, drawing and design. Every wall carries the work of the house: framed flash, paintings and prints collected and made over the years.
The studio runs private and unhurried: no counter, no queue, just your artist, good light and a puzzle on the go in the lounge. House rules are painted on the wall: no entourage, no bad attitude, no drugs or alcohol, no under 18s. Please be respectful of the space and those in it.
Painted flash, prints and studio tees. Order online below for delivery within South Africa, or pick up at the shop. Questions? Message the studio on Instagram or email 21arthurstattoo@gmail.com.

The best way to book is directly with your artist, either on Instagram or by email. Send a short description of your idea, along with placement and rough size, and they'll take it from there.
For anything else, email the shop.

Leave the bandage on for a minimum of 4 to 6 hours. In most cases you can sleep with the bandage on, but check with your artist first.
Wash your hands before removing the bandage. If the bandage is stuck to the tattoo, wet it with water to loosen it, then remove gently.
Wash the tattoo gently but thoroughly with unscented antibacterial soap and warm water, making sure all ointment, blood and plasma are removed. Do not use a loofah, sponge or bar of soap.
Pat the skin dry with a soft, clean cloth and let it air dry.
Apply a small amount of unscented lotion or Aqueous cream a couple of times a day for the next two weeks.
Your tattoo should be fully healed in 2 to 4 weeks.
For the first 3 days, wash your tattoo in the morning and at night.
Around days 4 to 7, your tattoo will start to peel. This is normal. Do not pick or scratch, as this can pull ink out and a touch-up will be required. Keep applying unscented lotion or Aqueous cream for two weeks.
Stay out of the sun, and wear sun-protective clothing over the tattoo.
No swimming or soaking for two weeks. Showers are fine.
Keep your tattoo clean and be mindful of people, animals or dirty clothing touching it. If it does happen, don't stress, just wash the tattoo with soap and water as soon as possible.
Contact your artist or a doctor if you notice any signs of infection.
Prices vary quite a bit depending on size, detail and placement. The best way to get an estimate is to stop by the studio, or email the shop with reference images of your idea, the size in cm and the placement. We'll get back to you with a quote.
